Play Soccer Ghana is dedicated to protecting the environment as a core part of our mission to build healthy, resilient communities. We bank on the power of football to enhance environmental protection and community well-being.
Protecting our communities, especially children under 8 years old, is a top priority. Through our "Active and Clean Cities" project, we're converting plastic waste into football nets while promoting health and safety.
We integrate malaria prevention messages—such as the proper use of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs)—into our formal and extracurricular activities, ensuring our participants understand the importance of disease prevention.
With plastic waste making up 14% of the waste stream in Ghana, Play Soccer Ghana is leading the charge in sustainable waste management through education and innovative recycling solutions.
PSG teaches youth to refuse single-use plastic water sachets. We partner with schools and communities to promote reusable water containers at all our sites.
We actively work to reduce plastic waste at events and training sessions by implementing waste-free match days and community clean-up campaigns.
Collected plastic water bags are sorted and reused as raw material in our Environets production process — extending the lifecycle of each piece of plastic.
The final step: recycled plastic sachets are woven and knotted into durable, functional football nets — closing the loop and putting waste back on the pitch.
Watch how we're transforming plastic waste into valuable resources and empowering communities through sustainable practices.
Our comprehensive 8-step circular process transforms plastic waste into valuable resources
Plastic bottles and containers ready for use
Gathering plastic waste from communities
Moving collected waste to processing facility
Separating different types of plastics
Compressing sorted plastics into bales
Breaking down plastic into small pieces
Cleaning shredded plastic thoroughly
Creating new products from recycled material
We encourage students to transform plastic, paper, and other waste into innovative items, demonstrating the potential for creative reuse and inspiring environmental stewardship.
By establishing strategic recycling stations and various collection strategies, we help prevent environmental hazards like flooding and choked drains caused by litter.
We recognize that clean water is the foundation of health and that resilient infrastructure is essential for the future. Currently, our mechanized water systems provide a reliable supply to communities, and we are actively working toward integrating solar power to ensure these systems remain sustainable and climate-resilient for years to come.
In collaboration with partners like Xylem, City Group (Manchester Cityzens Giving Foundation), Planet Water, Ahabanmono Impact, and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), we currently support the installation and maintenance of mechanized submersible pumps. Our strategic roadmap includes upgrading these units into solar-hybrid systems, leveraging renewable energy to enhance efficiency.
While our current mechanized systems provide vital access to water, we are moving toward solar integration to overcome the high costs and inconsistencies associated with grid energy. This transition will ensure a constant water supply irrespective of the season or power fluctuations.
Our water initiatives provide immediate benefits to adolescent girls and women by ensuring a safe, dignified environment and supporting sustainable livelihoods. By evolving these projects into solar-powered hubs, we aim to further reduce operational barriers and solidify long-term water security for the communities we serve.
Our sustainability initiatives directly contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, creating measurable impact for communities and the environment.
